roe deer - basic data

Habitat

Thrives in most environments, especially in protective forests, close to open ground.

Food

Usually graze at dusk or dawn. Roe deers are rather choosy animals that prefer tender plants. They also eat leaves and twigs, bilberry and lingonberry sprigs, and some berries and mushrooms, too.

Reproduction

The rutting period occurs in August. The doe usually gives birth to two fawns in May-June. The fawn lies low in the vegetation for the first few weeks, but thereafter follows its mother for nearly a year. Around half of the fawns are killed by foxes.
