Dead and dying trees are common in the natural forest unaffected by humans. Up to 40 % of the wood is dead. In the harvested forest, the trees are cut down before they grow old and die. Only 1% of the wood is dead.
A living and standing spruce contains 15 species of beetles. But on a dead spruce, lying down, there are 350 kinds of beetles, which are dependent on dead wood.
