the queen

Queen of the underground

At the very bottom of the ant-hill, several queens' chambers lie. An ant-hill may harbour about one thousand queens. A queen can live for 20 years. Worker-ants receive eggs from the queen´s abdomen.

Eggs are moved

A queen can lay 25,000 eggs in her entire lifetime. Worker-ants then move the eggs to special egg chambers, where they are guarded and cleaned by guarding-ants.

Eggs hatch

Eggs are hatched after 10 days, and out comes larvae without legs. The larvae are carried by working-ants to larvae chambers, where they are guarded, gently nursed as well as fed.

Moving larvae

Worker-ants carry the larvae around day and night so they are always in a favourable temperature.
