Threats and hope

Endangered

Throughout the 20th century, this eagle was a rare species in Sweden, killed by human hunters and environmental poisons. It was not until year 2000 that the eagles started to reproduce again.

Protected species

The white-tailed eagle was given protected status in 1924. Today, nesting trees need to be protected by sparing them from logging. The most harmful poisons are now prohibited.

Success

Although the work of restoring the eagle population is still performed largely on a voluntary basis, the results have been impressive: in 1970 - 70 pairs nesting in Sweden in 2000 - 350 pairs in 2007 - 500 pairs and in 2016 - 700 pairs!

Cooperation

The work has been led by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, and our museum has conducted tests for poisons. The programme is an excellent example of successful nature conservation.
