Here you can see 100 species of insect from flatlands and broad-leaved woods. Together they constitute less than 0.5 % of all insect species in Sweden, estimated at about 33,000.
Small organisms, for example insects, algae and fungi, are poorly known in our nature. Their multitude is one reason, another is that they are small and live secluded lives – there are many more species below ground than above.
The world´s biological diversity includes some 1,800,000 known species. Many are threatened today. Therefore, scientific research is pursued around the world to describe and map out the species´ appearance and range. The Swedish Museum of Natural History is one of many such institutions that conduct this vital research.
