It is natural that forests burn. Several plants and animals benefit from fire. Sweden's forest has, on average, burnt once every hundred years, that is to say, 1 % of the forest burns down every year. That represents an area the size of the island of Gotland.
Old forests contain many dead tree trunks and dead wood. During thunderstorms, lightning can ignite these dead trees. Twigs, dry lichen and moss make fine fuel as well.
