The fox - basic data

Habitats

Prefers a varied environment with fields and woodland, often near human settlements where there is plenty of food.

Behaviour patterns

Active at dusk and at night. If food supply is limited, occupies a large home range where a number of foxes can live in family groups.

Diet

Voles are the main food, but the menu is quite varied. It includes hares, roe deer fawns, sometimes birds and their eggs, insects and, in autumn, berries and other fruits. Carrion and household garbage are often important sources, as well.

Reproduction

The mating season is from February to early May. The kits are born around 50 days later – usually 4-7 in a den excavated from the ground. The young are weaned after about a month, and they begin to discover the world outside the den.
