Pond Turtle

Habitat

Lives in slowly running water, ponds and quiet lake inlets. This species requires long hot summers in order to reproduce. Spends winters in hibernation, buried in the mud of lake bottoms.

Diet

Small fish, frogs and other small animals.

Extinct in Sweden

It became extinct in Sweden about 4000 years ago, when the climate became too cold. The northernmost remains of the pond turtle are subfossils found in Östergötland County, Sweden.
