The rabbit is among the newer species in Sweden.Imported as hunting game in 1903, it established itself in Skåne and Gotland, then later in Halland and southern Småland counties. The rabbit is originally from southwestern Europe.
Light, dry soil is preferred for digging their underground warrens and the tunnels that form a connecting network. Here they live in colonies that are dominated by an older male.
Every year, a doe can produce a total of 20 young. The bunnies are blind and naked at birth; but after two or three weeks they peer out from their warrens.
Rabbits eat mainly grasses and herbs but also bark and buds of trees, and may cause damage to plantations. They are hunted humans, foxes, stoats and birds of prey.
