Eggs and larvae

The females lay their eggs in small accumulations of water. In time, the eggs hatch, and small larvae emerge to swim about in the water.

Filtering

Through special filters at their mouths, the larvae consume microscopic organisms in the water. They swim up to the surface of the water to breathe taking oxygen from the air.

Pupae

Each larva grows and transforms into a pupa. It also swims in the water and breathes air at the surface, but does not eat anything. Eventually, the pupa hatches and a mosquito flies away.

Ow, ow!

There may be swarms of mosquitoes during spring and early summer – especially in areas of marshland and damp forests, where there is plenty of water for the females to lay eggs in.
