Ow!

The mosquitoes that suck one's blood during the summertime are all females. This is a necessity for them; otherwise, their eggs cannot develop properly.

Male and female

The two sexes can be distinguished by their antennae. Those of the male are plume-shaped, while the females' are very thin. No need to fear male mosquitoes: They do not suck blood. Their most important source of food consists of nutritious liquids from plants.

Proboscis

At one end of the mosquito's long proboscis is a sharp bristle which penetrates the victim's skin. Through it, saliva is injected which prevents the blood from coagulating. The blood is then sucked up and conveyed to the rear of the mosquito's body, which swells up and turns red.
