Since the early 1980's, the population of small rodents has declined in northern Sweden. Arctic foxes have also declined.

Prior to 1900, the Arctic fox was common in Sweden. During most of the 20th century, however, it has been a threatened species with a sharply declining population. It was designated as a protected species in 1928. In 2015, about 180 adult individuals lived in Scandinavia.
