Here’s an Arctic fox looking for prey – perhaps a lemming. There's one! But it is quite ferocious and immediately assumes a threatening position – baring its teeth and hissing.
Among Arctic foxes, there are two types of colouring. The most common is a yellow-brown; less common is a bluish grey colour, which you see here.
For many predators, small rodents such as lemmings are the most important sources of food. In northen Sweden the Arctic fox, rough-legged buzzard and long-tailed skua are typical exemples.
The populations of small rodents in northern Sweden fluctuate annually. Years with teeming masses alternate with years when rodents are rare.
