Bloodthirst?

Is the wolverine bloodthirsty? Does it kill excessively, since it does not eat all of it? No, not really. Hoarding prey is a way to avoid future hunger. It is an effective adaptation to an environment where food is scarce.

Extra food

The wolverine is often short of food. In a Swedish scientific study, wild female wolverines were given extra food by placing carcasses in their home territories. These females gave birth to more cubs than those who did not receive extra food. Perhaps females store food in order to have it in the late autumn and winter, when the cubs grow in the womb. It appears as if the female keeps her hiding-places near the lair where she gives birth in February.
