Seals

Seal song

During summer and autumn, grey seals are present in the archipelagos along the Baltic coast. Now and then, they rest on low rocky islets from which their song can sometimes be heard– long sequences of mournful tones.

Three species . . .

In the display, you can see two different species. The larger is a grey seal, and the smaller is a harbour seal. They have a similar appearance. The easiest way to tell them apart is to study their head profiles.

. . . along the coasts

In Sweden, grey seals are found primarily in the Baltic Sea off the east coast, and the harbour seal along the west coast and the southern shores of Gotland and Öland. In the northern Baltic there is a third species, the ringed seal.
