Oystercatchers

Probing the mud

The oystercatcher thrusts its long bill into the mud in search
of food– cockles, mussels, worms and crustaceans. The smaller animals are soft, and thus easy to swallow; but with their hard shells, cockles and mussels are much more difficult.

Important food

The white and ribbed edible cockle is very common on the west coast of Sweden. It is an important source of food. The oystercatcher can eat 200 of them in a single day.
