Winters in the Nordic region are hard. Snow, ice, severe cold and lack of food are deadly threats. In order to survive the winter, plants and animals have adapted in various ways.
There are several examples of adaptation to winter conditions – the bear hibernating in its den, the jay laying up food stores, and so on.
There is yet another way to survive the hardships of winter – to fly away! That is the strategy of nearly 70 percent of the 240 bird species which nest in Sweden. During late summer and early autumn, migrating birds fly south from Sweden in a mighty stream, returning by the same routes in the spring.
