In her den, the female usually gives birth to two or three pups, most often during April-June. They follow along as she moves through her home range in late summer, autumn and winter. After that, they go their separate ways.
The otter population has been declining in Sweden since the 1950s, and is now an endangered species. Environmental poisons are the biggest threat. The Swedish Museum of Natural History and other Swedish agencies are conducting research on otter ecology to identify the problems.
