If the mutual attraction continues, the next phase of pair-formation begins: One of the gulls stretches its neck upward with its head and bill pointing downward.
Much the same position is used to threaten (see gulls at left), but now there is one important difference – the gull turns its face to the side. This displays the white colour on the back of its neck to the other bird, which then takes the same position.
The gulls move their heads slightly back and forth. They display their white necks, while at the same time checking each other out from the corners of their eyes.
The white colour on the back of the gull's neck is a peace sign, in contrast to the aggressive signal of the dark face. The gulls have now formed a pair, and repeat this ceremony from time to time in order to strengthen the bond.
