After each chick hatches, the parents remove the empty shell fragments by carrying them away far from the nest. The inside of the shell is white and can be seen at a great distance, attracting predators! But the outside of the egg and the nestlings have camouflage colouring.
The gulls' ability to chase away predators has been discovered by other birds, which therefore prefer to settle near gull colonies.
