the territory

The male's territory

The mating of the banded agrion takes place at the water's edge. The males are first on the scene. They look for sites that are suitable for the females to lay their eggs. The sites become territories to be defended against other males.

On guard

The males perch at strategic places with clear views of the surroundings, on guard against intruding males – and on the lookout for females!

Battles

Battles over territory are fought between males in the air, and can go on for hours. The battles require much energy and the male with the most energy, stored in fat, usually wins.
