Body language

The males may assume several special positions. The procedure is very rapid, each pose held for only a second.

Grunt-whistle

The male lifts its chest, bends the head and neck downward, dips the tip of its bill in the water and sucks in some water. With a quick motion he turns his head to the side, splashes with his bill, and squirts the water out in a thin stream. He makes low whistling and grunting sounds.
