The beaver can gnaw down a tree with a ten-inch diameter in about four hours. It chooses broad-leaved trees, the leaves and bark of which provide good fodder.
The outer layer of the pelt consists of long, coarse hair. Under that is a dense woolly layer. The pelt is water-repellent and keeps the animal warm and dry. The paws are webbed, and the broad tail functions as both oar and rudder.
