Moles live alone in territories which they mark out with urine and secretions from special glands. A territory consists of several tunnels. They may pass nearby each other, but are almost always separated.
Male moles are most active during the spring when they are searching for females. Then, they may scurry through the tunnels for over a kilometre every day. They also dig new tunnels into a female's territory in order to mate with her.
Summer is a busy time for females. Their need of food is great, since they now have young to suckle.
