Special chambers are dug out and lined with grass. This is where the mole rests and sleeps. If there is a female living in the tunnel system, this is where she gives birth to her young.
Some chambers are used to store food, primarily earthworms. Their heads are bitten off so that they cannot crawl away.
The mole loves worms; but it also eats insect larvae, especially those of beetles and butterflies that burrow into the earth.
Moles have only a small amount of fat stored in their bodies, enough to last for 36 hours. Well-stocked larders are therefore crucial to survival.
