The hedgehog has few enemies but it occasionally falls prey to a fox or badger. Car traffic is another danger. Hedgehogs usually dwell in gardens and similar human settings, preferably those that are a bit untidy, with leaves and brushwood lying about to provide materials for the winter nest.
The hedgehog's quills offer protection against enemies, especially when it curls itself into a ball to protect the exposed belly. At birth, a hedgehog has about 100 quills lying in the skin of its back. Gradually, these grow out, along with new ones. An adult hedgehog has about 6000 quills.
