Wild boars thrive in nutrient-rich broad-leaved woods, seeking food in damp places. Important food sources are acorns, beechnuts, hazelnuts and plant roots.
The wild boar's tramping and rooting can destroy farm crops. It has a fondness for oats, wheat,
potatoes and root crops. In some places, the damage can be great.
But the wild boar also makes itself useful by eating insect larvae that would otherwise damage the woods. Its rooting in the earth also promotes faster growth of trees and the number of ascular plant species has increased where wild boars have worked the ground. They are good at spreading plant seeds – and they provide meat for the freezer!
