A fiercely hissing little animal with a beautiful coat of orange, yellow, black and white can only be one thing – a mountain lemming!
Lemmings are known for dramatic fluctuations in their numbers. Some years, they seem to have disappeared; other years, they can be heard rustling in every tuft of grass.
During peak lemming years, they can be seen everywhere or at least many signs of their presence – large amounts of droppings, burrows and well-worn paths. At peak lemming years, the rodents can be 100 times more common than during a meagre year.
