Over the mud is a layer of peat from the fen stage, including the remains of sedge, horsetails, reeds and peat moss. This type of peat contains large bits of plants.
The top layer consists of bog peat. This layer is deep and consists largely of partially decayed sphagnum moss. The peat moss is most thoroughly decayed at the deepest level.
How far back in time have we come with our digging? The oldest stage, that of the lake, occurred right after the ice age. That means 17,000 years ago in the southerly region of Sweden, and 9,000 years ago in northern Sweden.
