fire shapes the forest

Fire, pines and spruces

Large pines are tolerant to fire. Their bark is thick, burns poorly, and protects the wood against heat. The trunk lacks inflammable branches. The spruce, on the other hand, has thin bark and has branches far down on the trunk. It burns easily and dies in the fire.

Fire shapes the forest

Forests in dry areas burn often. Pine dominates these forests. In humid areas, fires are rare
and the spruce thrives. It survives in shade, and dominates the pine in crowded forests. Spruce forests are common there.

Pines and eagles

Primordial forests, largely untouched by man, often had fires. Pine trees were common and many became several hundreds years old, stocky and large enough to bear eagles' nests weighing round 500 kilos.

Bostadsbrist
