Reproduction

Mating occurs during the late winter. The female gives birth to five or six cubs in the spring or early summer in an underground den. The male helps to care for the cubs, as do other members of the flock. They bring home food to the female and the cubs.

Population size

The wolf came to Sweden 10,000-12,000 years ago as one of the first species in the country. Wolves were common in Sweden in the early 19th century. Thereafter, they were hunted extensively. During the 20th century, only a small strain remained. The wolf was near-extinction
in northern Sweden and it was placed under protection in 1966. During the winter 2010-2011, the number of wolves in Sweden was estimted to be about 250 individuals.
