Quick meals

The black grouse eats most of the time during the brief winter days. Bark and birch buds are essential foods. It is digested in the cave at night, where the grouse also releases its droppings.

Snow and food

In order to survive a rugged winter the black grouse needs the right sort of snow. A thin layer of snow or a frozen crust, in which the bird can not dig, are lethal threats against the grouse as is a complete lack of food.
