Ability to remember

The acorns are stored one-by-one. The jay must remember hundreds of hide-outs as well as the ones already emptied! She has a huge ability to remember, just like other types of corvids, such as the crow and raven.

Rough winter

The Nordic winter is merciless: it is cold, food is scarce and clever predators lurk. But plants and animals have adapted to withstand the threats. Hoarding is a common way of surviving the winter's scarcity of food.

Other animals that hoard food are: wolverines, nuthatches, willow-tits, and the pygmy owls, displayed in other showcases.
