spruce

Most common

Our most common tree. Thrives on fertile ground rich in lime, which have a considerable supply of water. The spruce can grow in poor light, allowing it to crowd out other trees. That is why our forests are dominated by spruce.

Old and tall

A fully-grown spruce reaches 45 meters above ground. It can become over 400 years old, but is usually cut down after 75-150 years.

Fire and storm

Both fires and storms ravage the spruce forest. With its thin bark the spruce is easily killed in the fire's heat, and the tree's shallow root-system holds such a poor grip on the ground that it easily turns over in heavy winds.

The spruce blooms

The spruce blooms in May through June. Female blooms are far out on the branches in the crown. The smaller male flowers are further down.
