pine

Deep roots

Thrives on poor, dry ground,as well as on lean, swampy ground where it is the most common tree. In dry areas the pine locates waterwith long roots deep in the ground.

Impressive age

The pine tree grows over 35 meters high and lives to be over 650 years old. But at 100-150 years, it is usually cut down.

Fires and storm

The pine has thick bark, which saves the tree's life from many forest fires. Neither do storms usually budge it. A steadfast pole root, and slanting side roots, hold the pine securely in the ground.

The pine blooms

The blooming occurs in May through June. The flowers are on the sprouts: smaller female flowers on the tips, and the male flowers further down.

The cone is green at first and gray following maturity. It opens in the late winter, when the seeds are released.
