The bucks gather harems during the mating season, battling each other over the does. Antler size signals status. Mating takes place during autumn and the calves are born in May. A doe has one or two calves that follow her during the first months. By autumn the calves are weaned and must get on by themselves.
There are no wild reindeer remaining in Sweden; the last one was shot in the 19th century. The nearest population of mountain reindeer is in Dovre, Norway, with about 40,000 animals.
The largest populations of wild reindeer, with herds of several hundred thousand, are found in Russia and in North America(caribou). The number of domesticated reindeer in Sweden varies, depending on demand for their products and political-economic decisions. The current population is about 220,000.
