Tundra, coniferous forest and alpine regions of the northern hemisphere. Migrated into Sweden after the latest ice age.
Wild reindeer can be divided into two different groups – mountain and forest reindeers. The domesticated variety was developed from the mountain reindeer.
The reindeer's coat has two thick layers of hair, an effective isolation against cold. Hair also covers the sensitive snout and the undersides of the hooves.
The hooves are wide and round, providing a broad supporting surface that facilitates walking in snow. The hooves also have sharp edges that efficiently cut through the snow when the reindeer paws the ground for food.
